Product Description

Bernabeleva, or the bears forest, is located on the eastern edge of Spain’s Sierra de Gredos mountains and was originally planted in the 1920s by Dr. Vincente Alvarez-Villamil, although political turmoil prevented him from producing wine in the years that followedIn 2006, two of Vincentes great-grandchildren, Juan Diez Bulnes and Santiago Matallana Bulnes, vowed to fulfill their ancestors dream. The estates vineyards were now 80-years-old, and there were Granacha vineyards to purchase from neighboring properties as well. Rejecting current fashions in Spanish wine, the cousins resolved to make wines of purity and expressiveness that were in harmony with the beauty of their ancestral land.

Vinous Media's Josh Raynolds gave the 2014 vintage 91 points, saying "Vibrant, sharply focused scents of red berry liqueur and floral pastilles deepen as the wine opens with air. Silky, sweet and seamless, offering intense black raspberry and lavender flavors sharpened by white pepper. Fresh and light on its feet, finishing with strong thrust and gentle shaping tannins. There's something Pinot-like going on here, a trait that I often detect in this producer's wines."
