Product Description

The Cuilleron family domaine, located in the town of Chavanay, was founded several generations ago. Yves assumed full ownership and direction in 1987 and, since that time, has built an entirely new facility while at the same time acquiring additional vineyard property. The domaine now produces about 50,000 bottles annually divided between the appellations of St-Joseph Blanc, St-Joseph Rouge, Cote-Rotie and Condrieu. The Les Vignes d'à Côté Syrah is Cuilleron's entry-level Syrah, however it is far from entry-level in quality. This 100% Syrah is sourced from vineyards in Chavanay, essentially granite-infused soils. The Syrah is de-stemmed at harvest, fermentation is in open-top tanks with a two week maceration. An elevage then proceeds for approximately eight months in a mix of stainless steel and small barrel.

This flexible red can go to your neighbor’s barbecue while also being authentic and soil-driven enough to please even the most ardent aficionados of old-school Cote-Rotie and Saint-Joseph. It opens with a classic Northern Rhone Syrah black-plum robe followed by delicious aromas of pepper bacon, stemmy herbs and spicy blackberries. On the palate, the wine is more Saint-Joseph than Cote-Rotie, showing lush plum and black cherry notes mingling with salty, granitic minerals, smoke, lavender, and dried herbs. The wine finishes bright and juicy with vibrant acidity and just enough chewy tannins to balance its exuberant fruit expression.
